Details: Ideal for entertaining, this large coffee pot is an impressive addition to any Herend collection. The white porcelain pot is painted on both sides with birds perched in twigs, the telltale necklace draped among the leaves. Butterflies and other insects are scattered over the body of the pot. The handle, painted pale green, is modelled on a cut stem with tendrils. The spout is painted in gold in a faux bois design. The domed lid is decorated with butterflies and is surmounted by a hand-formed yellow rose. A narrow gold band adorns the rim, the bottom edge of the lid and the foot. Marked on bottom with Herend's blue mark, and hand-numbered 1611/RO 33.
There is a legend that a Rothschild Baroness lost her necklace, and believed it was stolen. Later, walking in her garden, she saw songbirds in a tree, and, hanging near them, her necklace. The owner of Herend heard this legend and, inspired by it, designed this pattern in its memory. The Rothschild family were delighted with the pattern, and ordered the collection in 1850. It was named "Rothschild Bird" (RO) in their honor.
